What is High Performance Cement? 

High performance cements are used for special purposes in order to eliminate some of the problems encountered in reinforced concrete structures. Calcium aluminate cement, which provides ease of use with its early setting time, is preferred due to its high resistance to groundwater. Sulfate Resistant Cements, Oilwell Cements specially designed for oil wells, and Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements preferred in areas where rapid repair is required such as bridges and highways can be listed among the high performance cement types.

The cements that we will examine in this article are as follows: 

  • Calcium Aluminate Cement,
  • Sulfate Resistant Cement,
  • Oilwell Cement,
  • Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement. 

Where to Use High Performance Cement?

Specialized cements and concrete designs are used in concrete structures to eliminate the below-mentioned disadvantages.

  • Lack of security under overload, 
  • Lack of studies related to special applications, 
  • Lack of durability in long-term use, 
  • Weakness in terms of sustainability, 
  • Adverse impacts of concrete structures on the environment, 
  • High performance cements are preferred when problems are encountered, such as not being able to resist the environmental impacts (seawater, chemical exposure, biogenic corrosion). 

What are the Properties of High Performance Cement?

Calcium Aluminate Cement and strength at 24 hours have higher strength properties than Portland cement. These cements have thermal resistance while they are also resistant to acids and sulfates. Chemical compositions of these cements can be adjusted according to customer requirements. Low alumina-high iron, low alumina-low iron and high alumina types are available.

Sulfate Resistant Cements are preferred in environments exposed to high sulfate environments such as seawater and sewage. The fact that the C3A phase in the cement is less than 5% provides resistance to sulfate. 

While CEM I type sulfate-resistant cements have strengths of 32.5 and 42.5 MPa, strengths of 42.5 and 52.5 MPa are observed in CEM IV/A and CEM IV/B-type sulfate-resistant cements, respectively. 

Oilwell Cement prevents fluid movement between layers in oil reserve zones, and supports the metal jacket of the drill pipe while protecting it from corrosion.

Referred to as A, B, C types API Construction Cement, these cements are similar to Portland cement. 

D, E, F types are referred to as API Retarded Cement and are not commonly used today. G, H; J types contain no additives other than calcium sulfate and water, and the most common type is G type.

White Portland Cement is a high-performance cement with rapid setting, high early strength, aesthetic appearance, as well as durability advantage, resistance to alkali-silica reactions and long service life.

What are the Advantages of High Performance Cement?

Apart from the general areas of use for Portland cement, high performance cements are preferred in areas where sulfate exposure is common, in structures that require rapid repair, for reasons such as protection of drill pipes during oil extraction, and to get cleaner products, or according to the different mechanical and chemical requirements of the project to be carried out.
